Tangled Bank Writing Center

Tangled Bank Writing Center gathers people of all backgrounds, abilities, and worldviews to write their lives and ideas among the iris flowers, in the bank barn, and next to the vegetable garden. College-curious students will find a joyful and easy space for producing personal essays and college applications, not just as tickets for university entry but as a chance to make meaning, claim power, and find value in a lifetime.

As artificial intelligence reshapes the world, thinking and writing remain critical activities of growth and problem solving. Tangled Bank Writing Center teaches writing not only as a craft, but also as a value. Through the processes of writing, students will learn how thoughts and words can shape, mend, and sustain an ecologically resilient, socially inclusive, and beautiful world.

Tangled Bank Writing Center and Farm offer workshops, retreats, and experiences to students who can't afford college counseling or writing instruction. Through partnerships with under-resourced schools and communities, we hope to build a future of thinkers and problem-solvers.

About Me

Hi, I'm Jill! I am a flower farmer, an author, a writing instructor, and an anthropologist. Also, in different eras, I was a fox researcher in the Channel Islands, a high school science teacher in rural North Carolina, a bike messenger in Seattle, and a bartender and Fulbright Scholar in the Galápagos Islands. I received my doctorate in cultural anthropology from the University of Michigan, then taught writing and anthropology at Harvard where I was a Dean.

After Harvard, my husband and I moved to a farm in Maryland where we raise four kids, two cats, a dog, some chickens, and so many mice and snakes who battle us for territory.I have a brand new book called The People's Guide to College Applications (Globe Pequot Publishing Group/Prometheus). This book walks students and their families through the college application process in concrete steps, using lots of examples while encouraging calm and joy. I have another book: A Memoir in Dead Animals. It is about motherhood, fishermen, and the Galápagos Islands (in revision with Tessler Literary Agency). When I'm not writing, chasing raccoons and hawks from my chickens, or selling iris rhizomes to the greater DC area, I teach college application and essay writing workshops from my barn. I coach students into their favorite schools across the country while mentoring parents into contentment.

Feel free to write with any inquiries or thoughts!  Jill
